🎃 Coloring a Witch and Pumpkin Step by Step
This scene may look a bit detailed at first, but once you start, it becomes much easier to follow.
We’ll build it step by step — first the background, then the witch, then the pumpkin, and only after that we’ll add shadows and texture.
Take your time, keep your strokes light at the beginning, and enjoy the process. Little by little, the whole picture will come together into a rich, finished scene.
🌳 Step 1 — Start with the Background
Let’s begin with everything behind the main scene.
Take a light blue and gently fill in the sky. Then use brown for the tree trunks, branches, and the fence.
Add soft green to the leaves and the ground, working slowly from one area to the next.
Keep your hand light and let the pencil strokes stay visible — no need to smooth anything out.
For now, leave the witch and the pumpkin completely untouched.
🧙 Step 2 — Color the Witch
Now let’s bring the witch to life.
Start with the skin — use a soft, natural tone for the face and hands. Then move to the hair and give it a simple base color.
After that, color the hat and the clothes using calm, even shades. Just fill everything in one area at a time.
Keep your strokes light and visible. No shadows yet — we’re just laying down the base colors.
Leave the background and the pumpkin just as they are.
🎃 Step 3 — Color the Pumpkin
Now let’s color the pumpkin.
Take a bright orange and gently fill in all the pumpkin sections, working from one segment to the next.
Then use green or brown for the stem and color it in the same simple way.
Make sure everything is filled evenly, but keep the strokes visible and light.
No shadows yet — just a clean base color. Leave the witch and the background as they are.
🌒 Step 4 — Add Depth to the Background
Now let’s make the background feel a bit deeper.
Take darker shades of the same colors and add stronger strokes under the fence and around the base of the trees.
Add a few darker areas inside the grass clusters, and lightly go over the upper corners of the sky to create a soft frame.
Keep the darkest strokes close to the objects, then ease off as you move outward.
Leave the witch and the pumpkin completely untouched.
🧙 Step 5 — Add Shadows to the Witch
Now let’s give the witch more shape and depth.
Take darker versions of the same colors and add shadows under the arms, inside the sleeves, and along the folds of the dress.
Add a bit more shadow under the hat brim, around the neck, and wherever parts overlap.
Use short, clear strokes that follow the shape of the fabric and the body. Press a little more so the shadows stand out.
Leave the pumpkin and the background just as they are.
🎃 Step 6 — Add Texture to the Pumpkin
Now let’s make the pumpkin look round, textured, and much more interesting.
Take a darker orange and add strong vertical strokes along each pumpkin section. Follow the natural lines of the pumpkin, from top to bottom.
Make the grooves between the sections darker, and add a little more shadow under the stem and underneath the pumpkin.
Don’t cover the whole pumpkin again. Just build on top of the orange base with clear, bold strokes.
Leave the witch and background exactly as they are.
