We’ll build the picture step by step — first the background, then the pumpkin and ghost, and finally the shadows, depth, and glowing details that create the spooky atmosphere.

Don’t rush the later stages. The contrast between the dark background, bright pumpkin, and glowing ghost is what makes the whole scene feel dramatic and alive.

🍂 Step 1 — Color the Background

Let’s begin with everything around the main characters.

Use soft autumn colors to fill in the background — brown for the fence and tree, gray for the stones and stairs, dark green for the bushes, and warm gray-brown tones for the house wall and lantern.

Work slowly with light pressure and keep the pencil strokes visible so the scene still feels hand-colored.

Make sure all background areas are filled evenly, but don’t darken large sections yet.

Leave the pumpkin and the ghost completely untouched for now.

🎃 Step 2 — Color the Pumpkin

Now let’s bring the pumpkin to life.

Use a bright orange and carefully fill in every pumpkin section with light, visible pencil strokes.

For the stem, use green or brown tones. Inside the carved face openings, keep the color darker so the face stands out more clearly.

Take your time and make sure there are no white gaps left inside the pumpkin.

Leave the ghost and all background elements exactly as they are.

Use a very pale blue or light gray and color the entire ghost with extremely light pressure.

No shadows yet — just a gentle base tint while keeping all black outlines perfectly clean.

Keep the darker strokes slightly inside the sections instead of directly on the outlines, and avoid using black.

Now let’s make the ghost feel softer, fuller, and more magical.

Use a slightly darker pale blue or cool gray and follow the curves of the ghost with visible curved strokes. Add shadows inside the lower folds, side folds, and inner bends of the fabric shape.

Keep the shadows soft, but clear enough that the folds become easy to see.

Then add a pale white or very light blue glow around the outside edges of the ghost. Make the glow strongest around the head and the outer flowing curves.

Keep the ghost light overall and avoid harsh dark areas. The glow should feel soft and magical, not like a hard outline.
