🐘 African Elephant Coloring Tutorial

This peaceful African savanna scene is a great way to practice coloring natural landscapes, realistic animals, and gentle lighting effects.

We’ll build the picture step by step, beginning with the landscape, then coloring the elephants, and finally adding shadows and bright sunlight highlights to bring the scene to life.

Each stage adds a little more depth, making the elephants gradually stand out against the warm African landscape.

Take your time with the final highlights. A few carefully placed white pencil strokes can make the elephants and the sunlit grass look much more natural and realistic.

🌿 Step 1 — Color the African Landscape

Let’s start with the natural background around the elephants.

Use pale blue for the sky, warm tan for the dirt path, and muted green tones for the grass, bushes, and distant hills.

For the trees, choose soft green-brown shades so they feel natural but not too dark.

Keep everything flat and even for now, using light visible pencil strokes and no shadows yet.

Leave the adult elephant and baby elephant completely untouched for now.

🐘 Step 2 — Color the Elephants

Now let’s bring both elephants into the scene.

Use warm gray tones for the adult elephant and baby elephant, filling the bodies, ears, trunks, tails, and legs carefully.

Add light ivory to the tusks, and use a slightly darker gray for the toenails so the small details stay visible.

Keep the colors flat and even for now, with light visible pencil strokes and no shadows yet.

Leave the African landscape exactly as it is.

🌿 Step 3 — Add Depth to the Landscape

Now let’s make the African landscape feel deeper and more natural.

Use darker greens, browns, and blue-gray tones to shade the outer edges of the scene, keeping the center around the elephants brighter.

Add darker strokes underneath the trees, between bushes, and in selected grass areas to create more depth.

Along the dirt path, add shadows on both sides so the path feels more shaped and grounded.

Work only on the background. Leave both elephants exactly as they are.

🐘 Step 4 — Add Shadows to the Elephants

Now let’s make both elephants look rounded and more realistic.

Use darker gray tones to add strong shadows beneath the ears, under the trunks, beneath the bellies, around the legs, and under the tails.

Add darker strokes inside the skin folds and where one body part overlaps another.

Follow the curves of the elephants with clear pencil strokes so the bodies feel large, heavy, and three-dimensional.

Work only on the adult elephant and baby elephant. Leave the background exactly as it is.

🦁 A Safari-Themed Coloring Break

African animal pages are fun because children can recognize many of the animals right away. Lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, monkeys, and other safari animals make each page feel lively and easy to start.

These pages work well at home when kids are interested in animals, nature, or safari scenes. Some children focus on one favorite animal, while others enjoy the whole savanna setting with trees, grass, and small background details.

In classrooms, kindergarten, or animal-themed activities, these pages can be used as a calm task after talking about wildlife or different habitats. The drawings give children something visual and familiar to connect with.

Finished pages are often kept because each animal ends up with its own character. Even a simple coloring choice can make a lion, zebra, or elephant feel completely different.

All pages are A4 with clean line art and are ready to print at 100% scale. Choose any page below and start whenever you like.
