🦴 Skeleton Family Coloring Tutorial

This playful autumn scene has plenty to explore — a skeleton family, their little bone dog, pumpkins, garden tools, and a wonderfully messy pile of leaves.

We’ll color it in manageable stages, beginning with the yard and the light bone tones. Then we’ll add the family’s clothing, autumn leaves, pumpkins, and all the small accessories that give the picture its personality.

The final steps bring everything together with deeper shadows between the bones, layered leaves, rounded pumpkins, and clearer fabric folds. Take it one section at a time, and the busy scene will come together much more easily than it first appears.

🍂 Step 1 — Color the Autumn Background

Let’s begin with the autumn yard around the skeleton family.

Use a soft blue for the sky, warm brown shades for the house, tree, and fence, and muted green for the grass.

Then color the fallen leaves with a mix of yellow, orange, red, and brown. You can vary the colors from leaf to leaf to make the ground feel more lively.

Add a simple color to the flower pot and gently fill in the remaining ground. Keep everything light and even for now — we’ll add depth later.

Leave the skeleton family, skeleton dog, leaf basket, rake, and pumpkins completely uncolored for the next steps.

🦴 Step 2 — Color the Skeleton Bones

Now let’s add a soft base color to all the bones in the skeleton family.

Choose a warm ivory, cream, or very light beige pencil. Gently color the skulls, jaws, ribs, spines, arms, hands, legs, and feet of the father, mother, and child.

Color the skeleton dog in the same way, including its skull, ribs, legs, paws, spine, and bone tail. Keep the color light so the bones still look bright against the autumn background.

Leave all clothing and accessories uncolored for now. The hats, bows, necklace, and other details will be easier to work on separately.

Keep the black eye sockets, noses, mouths, and outlines exactly as they are. At this stage, the bones only need one gentle, even layer of color.

🍁 Step 3 — Add the Autumn Colors

Now comes the colorful part — the clothes, pumpkins, tools, and all those autumn leaves.

Start with the skeleton family’s clothing and accessories. Choose a few colors that look good together, then color the hats, bows, necklace, clothes, and shoes one piece at a time.

Use warm brown shades for the basket and rake. Color both pumpkins bright orange, with green or brown stems.

For the leaves, mix red, orange, yellow, ochre, brown, and muted green. Make sure you catch every one — the falling leaves, the scattered leaves on the ground, those inside the basket, the large leaf pile, and even the leaf held by the skeleton dog.

Keep the colors simple for now, without adding shadows. Leave the bones, house, tree, fence, grass, flower pot, and hanging lantern exactly as they are.

🌳 Step 4 — Add Depth to the Autumn Yard

Now let’s add some depth to the yard while keeping the skeleton family and all the colorful autumn details just as they are.

Start around the outside of the picture with darker brown, green, gray, and blue-gray pencils. Add a little more color to the corners and side edges, but leave the middle area around the family and leaf pile brighter.

Choose one side of the tree trunk and its larger branches, then darken that side with strokes that follow the bark. This small change will make the tree look round instead of flat.

Next, add shadows beneath the porch and fence rails, behind the bushes, under the flower pot, and around the hanging lantern. A few darker touches in these places will help everything feel properly settled in the yard.

Finish with some darker strokes in selected grass and ground areas near the edges. Stay away from the skeletons, leaves, clothes, basket, rake, and pumpkins — this step is only for the background around them.

🦴 Step 5 — Add Shadows to the Bones

Now let’s give the skeleton family more shape and make the separate bones easier to see.

Take a darker beige or warm gray pencil and add shadows along the lower and inner curves of the bones. Work through the skulls, jaws, arms, hands, legs, feet, and joints one section at a time.

Add deeper color beneath the skull edges and jaws, between the ribs, around the pelvises, and wherever two bones overlap. These darker spaces will help the skeletons look much less flat.

Color the skeleton dog in the same way. Deepen the spaces inside its rib cage, beneath the skull, around the legs and joints, and along the lower curve of the bone tail.

Use short curved strokes that follow the shape of each bone, and choose beige or gray instead of black. Leave all clothes, accessories, leaves, tools, pumpkins, and the background exactly as they are.
