🎨 Ideas for Coloring Fish Pages
For the cartoon fish, bold colors work well because the shapes are large and clearly separated. Try a limited palette of two or three colors on each fish, then use a contrasting shade for the fins, spots, or scales.
Freshwater fish can be colored with more natural combinations such as olive green, brown, gray, silver, pale yellow, and muted orange. Keeping some areas of the body lighter can help show the shine of scales without adding heavy shadows.
Aquarium and coral-reef scenes can handle stronger color contrasts. Bright blue, turquoise, orange, yellow, red, and purple can be used across different fish, while plants, rocks, coral, shells, and sand give plenty of room for additional colors.
Colored pencils are useful for small scales, fins, roots, and detailed underwater backgrounds, while markers work well on the larger cartoon shapes. On long fins, layering a darker shade near the body and a lighter shade toward the edge can create depth without covering the line work.
Tip: Leave a narrow white highlight on bubbles and a few scales to make the underwater scenes look brighter.
