🎨 Color Ideas for Whale Sharks and Reefs

Whale sharks can be colored in cool blue-gray, slate, or muted brown-gray tones, with a lighter underside and pale spots standing out across the back. Reef scenes give you more room for color, with turquoise or deep blue water, orange and pink corals, green sea plants, and small fish in brighter shades.

The finished examples are only color ideas, not rules. You can keep the shark close to its natural colors, use softer pencil shading across the patterned body, or make the surrounding reef much brighter while leaving the whale shark more subdued. 🌊 Details in the Whale Shark Scenes

One of the most noticeable features to color is the pattern covering the whale shark’s back. Rows of spots and narrow markings change with the angle of the body, so a side view, a top view, and a shark turning toward the viewer each give you a different pattern to work with.

The backgrounds also vary considerably. Some drawings leave plenty of open water around the shark, while others place it above coral, rocks, sea plants, and schools of fish. Several scenes use the surface of the water and rays of light to add depth without crowding the main subject.

The human scenes make the whale shark’s size especially clear. Divers and snorkelers appear at different distances from the animal, including underwater photography scenes, groups watching from below, swimmers near the surface, and people observing a whale shark from a tour boat.

Other pages focus on marine life rather than people. There are scenes with a sea turtle, small reef fish, several whale sharks sharing the same stretch of water, and close views where the shark’s broad head or open mouth becomes the main part of the composition.

All of the designs are available as printable A4 PDFs. For the original proportions and line detail, print the PDF at 100% scale rather than using a fit-to-page setting.
