đź‘» Transparent Ghost Coloring Tutorial
This Gothic castle scene has an unusual challenge: the ghost woman needs to feel present without ever becoming a solid figure. The stone hall, carved railings, and steps should still remain visible through her flowing dress.
We’ll begin by coloring the architecture, then add a very pale tint to the ghost and carefully build her folds with light, transparent shadows. The background stays visible through every stage, which is what creates the ghostly effect.
The final white pencil highlights will brighten only the outer edges and add a narrow halo around her. Work lightly and build the color little by little — transparency is the most important part of this picture.
🪟 Step 1 — Color the Stone Hall
Let’s begin with the old stone walls and the large Gothic window at the top of the hall.
Choose a few quiet stone colors, such as cool gray, warm gray, or soft brown-gray. Color the walls lightly, then use a slightly deeper shade for some of the details in the window and the distant wall behind the steps.
When you reach the ghost woman, leave her completely alone. Don’t color her white or fill in her shape — she should stay transparent, with the lines of the room still showing through her.
The steps and railings can stay uncolored too. For now, we’re only giving the stone hall and Gothic window their first simple layer of color.
🏛️ Step 2 — Color the Steps and Railings
Now let’s move on to the steps, handrails, and carved railing panels.
Choose soft stone colors or warm wood shades that stand out clearly from the walls. Color each step first, then work your way through the banisters and smaller carved details.
Where the ghost overlaps the staircase, keep coloring the steps and railings lightly enough that their lines remain easy to see through her. She should still look transparent, not like a solid figure placed in front of them.
Leave the ghost herself, the stone walls, and the Gothic window unchanged. We’re only adding the first simple layer of color to the steps and railings, without shadows yet.
🏰 Step 3 — Add Depth to the Castle Interior
Now let’s give the stone hall and staircase a little more depth.
Use darker versions of the same colors to shade between the stone blocks, inside the wall recesses, and around the deeper parts of the Gothic window.
Add shadow beneath the step edges, under the handrails, and inside the carved railing openings. You can also darken the inner curves of the steps to make them stand out more.
Leave the ghost woman completely untouched. The lines of the steps and railings should still stay visible through her, so keep the area around her a little lighter.
👻 Step 4 — Add a Transparent Tint to the Ghost
Now we can finally add a little color to the ghost woman — but the key is to keep her transparent.
Choose an extremely pale blue-gray, lavender-gray, or pearl-gray pencil. With barely any pressure, lightly go over her hair, face, hands, sleeves, sash, and flowing dress.
Think of this as a faint veil of color rather than a solid layer. The steps, railings, and architectural details behind her should still be clearly visible through every part of her figure.
Don’t fill her with white or cover the background inside her outline. She should look like part of the castle air — softly tinted, almost weightless, and still completely see-through.
👻 Step 5 — Shape the Ghost’s Flowing Folds
Now let’s give the ghost a little more shape without losing her transparent look.
Use a slightly darker blue-gray or lavender-gray pencil. Add a few light shadows between the strands of hair, beneath the chin, around the neck, inside the sleeves, and just below the sash.
For the dress, follow every wave and fold with long curved strokes. Make the deepest bends near the bottom a little darker so the fabric looks as though it is floating through the air.
Keep all the shadows light enough for the steps and railings behind her to remain clearly visible. She should gain depth, but still look airy and completely transparent.
✨ Step 6 — Add Luminous Edges and a Soft Halo
Now let’s add the final touches that make the ghost appear softly illuminated while keeping her transparent.
Use a white colored pencil to draw thin highlights along a few outer curves of the hair, face, shoulders, sleeves, hands, waist, and flowing dress. Add several narrow white strokes to the highest folds of the fabric.
Next, draw a slim white halo just outside the ghost’s outline. Make it a little brighter around the head, shoulders, hands, and outer edges of the dress, leaving small breaks so it still looks naturally hand-drawn.
Keep the inside of the ghost untouched so the colored steps and railings remain clearly visible through her. The white pencil belongs only on selected edges and in the narrow space immediately around the figure.
