This Halloween pumpkin scene becomes much more dramatic once the dark shadows, smoke, and glowing details start building up layer by layer.

We’ll begin with muted background colors, then color the pumpkin itself, and finally add strong shadows, texture, and glowing effects to create a dark spooky atmosphere.

Take your time with the later stages. The deep grooves, sharp teeth, twisted horns, and swirling smoke are what make the final image feel intense and full of depth.

🌑 Step 1 — Color the Dark Background

Let’s begin with the spooky background around the pumpkin.

Use deep gray-blue tones for the sky, muted browns for the trees and roots, dark gray for the rocks, and dusty earthy colors for the ground and leaves.

Color the bats with very dark simple tones, but keep the center area around the pumpkin a little lighter than the outer edges.

Use light pressure and visible pencil strokes so the texture still feels hand-colored and rough.

Leave the pumpkin, horns, face, teeth, and all black outlines completely untouched for now.

🎃 Step 2 — Color the Pumpkin Monster

Now let’s bring the pumpkin itself to life.

Use a deep orange for the main pumpkin body and a darker reddish-orange inside the carved face areas to make the expression feel more intense.

Color the horns and stem with gray-brown tones, and keep the teeth noticeably lighter than the surrounding face.

Fill every section completely, but keep the pencil strokes visible so the texture still feels rough and hand-colored.

🌑 Step 3 — Add Background Shadows and Depth

Now let’s make the background darker and more dramatic around the pumpkin.

Use darker browns, cool grays, and deep muted greens to darken the outer edges of the scene — especially the corners and side edges — while keeping the center area around the pumpkin brighter.

Darken only one side of the tree trunks and roots to create stronger volume. Add deeper shadows inside the smoke curls and where the smoke overlaps itself.

You can also deepen the shadows between rocks and inside cracks in the ground to make the foreground feel rougher and more dimensional.

🎃 Step 4 — Add Depth to the Pumpkin Body

Now let’s make the pumpkin body look much more rounded and dramatic.

Use darker orange and reddish-brown tones to deepen the grooves between the pumpkin sections and all the curved areas around the face.

Follow the rounded shape of the pumpkin with curved strokes, especially around the eyes, facial folds, lower curves, and under the stem.

Make the darkest shadows deep inside the grooves and around the eye sockets. You can also darken the inside of the mouth area while keeping the teeth untouched and lighter.

Do not add any shadows to the horns or teeth yet. Keep all darker strokes slightly inside the pumpkin shapes rather than directly on the outlines.

✏️ Step 5 — Add Depth to the Horns and Teeth

Now let’s make the horns and teeth look sharper and more dramatic.

Use dark gray, brown-gray, ivory, and off-white tones to deepen the shadows along every horn ridge and curved section.

Follow the shape of the horns with curved strokes, making the undersides and inner curves much darker while keeping the horn tips lighter.

For the teeth, add darker shadows underneath the upper teeth and between each tooth so they separate clearly from one another and from the dark mouth behind them.

Keep the teeth lighter than the inside of the mouth, and build the contrast using layered visible strokes instead of smooth blending.

🌫️ Step 6 — Deepen the Smoke and Add the Glow

Now let’s create the final spooky atmosphere around the pumpkin.

Use dark gray and cool gray tones to deepen every swirl and curl of the smoke. Follow the curved movement of the smoke with layered strokes, especially where the folds overlap.

Add darker shadows inside the inner curls to make the smoke feel thicker and more dramatic.

Then add a soft eerie glow inside the eyes and deep inside the mouth using pale yellow, pale orange, or muted red. Keep the brightest color toward the center of the glow.

You can also add a few lighter edges along some smoke curves so the smoke separates more clearly from the dark background.
