🔥 Haunted Fireplace Coloring Tutorial
This old room is filled with small details — crowded bookshelves, antique furniture, flickering candles, pumpkins, cobwebs, and mysterious ghost-shaped flames inside the fireplace.
We’ll begin with simple base colors, working through the architecture, furniture, and smaller objects one group at a time. Once every part is colored, we’ll add strong shadows to give the room more depth.
The final layer of warm firelight and candlelight will bring the whole scene together. Keep your pencil strokes visible and build the color gradually so the finished picture still feels naturally hand-colored.
🔥 Step 1 — Color the Room and Fireplace
Begin with the room itself, leaving all the furniture and decorations untouched for now.
Use light and medium browns for the ceiling boards, wooden beams, mantel, and floor. Color the stone walls and fireplace with cool gray, warm gray, and soft brown-gray shades.
Give every smooth wall section a pale aged beige or light warm gray. Be sure to color the side walls and the areas behind the furniture so no part of the room remains white.
Color the logs brown and add simple yellow, orange, and muted red to the fire. Keep the original ghost-shaped flames visible, tinting them only with a very pale blue-white, yellow-white, or light gray.
Finish the wall and ceiling cobwebs with a pale gray. Keep all colors light and even, without adding shadows yet.
📚 Step 2 — Color the Bookcase and Upper Details
Now let’s fill the shelves and add color to the objects around the upper half of the room.
Use a warm medium brown for the bookcase and grandfather clock. Color every book on the shelves and on top with a varied mix of muted red, blue, green, ochre, brown, and purple.
Add aged gold or bronze to the chandelier, candlesticks, portrait frame, globe stand, and clock details. Use ivory or aged cream for the candles, wax, skull, and clock face.
Finish the portrait, globe, raven, hourglass, mantel books, and candle flames with quiet antique colors. Make sure every mantel object is fully colored.
Keep the colors light and even, without shadows or glow. Leave the room, fireplace, fire, and lower furniture exactly as they were in the previous step.
🪑 Step 3 — Color the Armchair and Foreground
Now let’s complete the lower part of the room and bring color to the reading corner.
Choose a deep muted shade for the armchair, such as burgundy, dusty purple, dark green, or warm brown. Color the upholstery, buttons, worn fabric, trim, and wooden legs.
Fill the rug with a balanced mix of muted reds, browns, ochres, greens, or dark blues. Then color all three pumpkins with natural orange tones and add brown or soft green to their stems.
Finish the loose book, mouse, yarn ball and strand, floor spider, and every remaining small object. Choose a yarn color that stands out clearly from the rug.
Keep this layer light and even, without shadows. Leave every previously colored part of the room exactly as it is.
🌑 Step 4 — Deepen the Room Shadows
Now let’s make the old room feel deeper and more atmospheric by adding strong shadows to the architecture.
Use dark brown, charcoal gray, and deeper stone shades around the outer edges and corners. Add clear shadows beneath every large ceiling beam and in the corners of the smooth walls.
Deepen some of the gaps between the stone blocks, then darken the fireplace opening much more than the surrounding stone. Add strong shading beneath the mantel and around the hearth.
Darken selected spaces between the floorboards, especially near the sides of the room. Build the shadows with visible layers of pencil rather than smoothing them together.
Keep the area around the fireplace slightly brighter, and leave all furniture, decorations, animals, firewood, and flames exactly as they are.
🕰️ Step 5 — Add Depth to the Furniture and Objects
Now let’s bring the furniture and smaller objects forward with stronger, clearly visible shadows.
Use darker versions of the existing colors beneath every bookcase shelf, between overlapping books, and under book covers. Shade the chandelier, portrait, mantel objects, and clock along their lower edges and recessed details.
Give the armchair deep shadows inside every fold, around the buttons, beneath the armrests and cushion, and along the legs. Add darker strokes to the rug edges and selected parts of its pattern.
Follow the curved sections of every pumpkin with strong rounded shadows, then add direction and texture to the mouse, yarn, loose book, and floor spider.
Keep the candle flames bright, and leave the walls, fireplace, floor, firewood, and ghost-shaped flames exactly as they are.
