The outer shell of each house gives you one set of surfaces to work with, while the rooms inside add another. Roofs, stone, wood, plaster, windows, and doors can stay fairly consistent even when every interior uses a different palette.

Inside the rooms, smaller objects create most of the variation. Beds, chairs, shelves, tables, lamps, rugs, books, plants, and kitchen details can repeat a few colors across the house or be treated as separate little spaces.

Cutaway drawings also make it easy to play with contrast. A darker exterior can make the rooms stand out more clearly, while lighter walls and stronger furniture colors can keep the interior readable when a page contains many small details.

Because every illustration is a self-contained house, the pages can be colored in any order. Some have more architectural detail, while others put more attention on the objects and rooms inside, so the amount and type of detail changes from page to page.
